November 2
Fall Fine Art Auction

Grogan & Co.’s annual Fall Fine Art Auction is set for Saturday, November 2, at 11 a.m. and will offer a selection of top fresh-to-market 19th- and 20th-century American art.

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949), Ogunquit, Maine (Houses on the Sound), 1909-11. Oil on canvas, 33 x 40 in. Courtesy Grogan & Co. Estimate: $100/150,000

Leading the upcoming sale are several important 20th-century paintings, including Paul Sample’s 1949 oil The Horse Show, South Woodstock, Vermont. Estimated at $50,000 to $70,000, the auction house notes that “this work is a perfect example of the artist’s mature New England regionalism style. In the large-scale Horse Show, Sample’s color sense and keen attention to human detail come together to bring this Woodstock, Vermont tradition to life.”

A museum-quality Walt Kuhn oil, titled Ogunquit, Maine (Houses on the Sound), is another piece to look out for in the November sale. Featuring complexly colored impasto brushstrokes, this seminal early work was painted in the years leading up to the Armory Show. It’s expected to sell for $100,000 to $150,000.

The Fall Fine Art Auction follows the success of Grogan & Co.’s Spring Fine Art

Auction, which saw the 200 lots on offer achieve a 90 percent sell-through rate and over $1.6 million in sales.
